Avoca Museum:
Avoca is the home place of Revolutionary Patriot Colonel Charles Lynch. The house is an excellent example of 19th Century American Queen Anne architecture. The property is listed on both the Virginia and National Registers of Historic Places. It was given to the Town of Altavista in the 1980s, and is operated by the non-profit Avoca Museum and Historical Society. |

YMCA:
The Altavista Area YMCA was founded in 1971 making the community of Altavista
the smallest town in America with a YMCA. Today the YMCA encompasses almost
three city blocks and over 65,000 square feet of facilities valued at over $5
million dollars. The physical complex consists of the Family Center built in
1972 and the Athletic Center constructed in 1994. |
Leesville
Lake:
Leesville Lake is part of the Smith Mountain
hydro-electric pump storage project on the Roanoke River built by AEP in the
early 1960's. It begins at the base of Smith Mountain Dam and snakes 17 miles to
Leesville Dam which is just upstream from Leesville Virginia and the mouth of
Goose Creek. It is the "lower" lake of the pump storage system and lake levels
fluctuate between 600 ft to 613 ft above mean sea level. The lake covers 3,270
acres containing 94,900 acre-feet of water at full pond. |
Appomattox Court House:
Walk the old county lanes where Robert E. Lee, Commanding General of the Army of Northern Virginia, surrendered his men to Ulysses Grant, General-in-Chief of all United States forces, on April 9, 1865. Imagine the events that signaled the end of the Southern States' attempt to create a separate nation.

National D-Day Memorial:
The National D-Day Memorial Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational foundation warranted by the U.S. Congress to establish, in Bedford, Virginia, and maintain for the nation, a memorial to the valor, fidelity, and sacrifice of the Allied Armed Forces who landed in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. |
Peaks of Otter:
Nestled between two of the three mountains that make up the Peaks of Otter is the
Peaks of Otter Lodge and Restaurant, located at Milepost 86 on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Bedford, Virginia, and open year round. |
Smith Mountain Lake:
Virginia's second largest lake, offers superb recreational activities, 500 miles of waterfront shoreline, a wide variety of water sports, and very affordable vacation rentals. |
